Message from the Worshipful Master – February 17, 2018

Greetings Brethren,

I am pleased to provide you an update on the activities of Sheffield Lodge #625. First off, I would like to apologize for the delay in updates and will try to provide them more frequently in the future.

It has been a very busy period at Sheffield Lodge. In November we conferred a second degree on our newest brother, and on February 8th we conferred the third degree. We are pleased to welcome Brother Shawn Woody to the fraternity and to our lodge. We had a very large turnout for this event with over 30 master masons present representing not only Sheffield Lodge but Ivanhoe Lodge #446, Kansas City Lodge, #220, Temple Gate Lodge #299, Compass Lodge #120, Alpha Lodge #659, Raytown Lodge #391, Harry S. Truman Lodge #1941, Cecile Daylight Lodge #305, Independence Lodge #76, McDonald Lodge #324, Rising Sun Lodge #13, Christian Lodge #392, Belton-Grandview Lodge #450 and Grand River Lodge #276.

On December 21st five members of Sheffield Lodge visited Ivanhoe Lodge #446 to assist with a third degree and captured the 18th District Traveling Gavel. Sheffield held the gavel until February 8th, when seven members of Ivanhoe Lodge visited to reclaim the gavel. We look forward to gathering the members of Sheffield together in the near future to make a fraternal visit to their lodge and hopefully recapture it. For those that are not aware, the Traveling Gavel is a function of the 18th District Square and Compass Association, designed to promote fraternity between lodges. Each time the gavel is captured a hat is passed for donations and at the end of the year the money collected is donated to the Masonic charity of choice of the lodge who captured the gavel the most times in the year. It is in the interest of all for this gavel to travel frequently and we hope to help keep it moving.

Our membership continues to grow as we have received petitions for and elected two new members. We have scheduled first degrees for both of these candidates on Thursday, February 22, at 7:00pm. We would love to see all available members and brothers to join us as we would greatly appreciate the turnout to help welcome two new brothers to the fraternity.

Just as a reminder we meet the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 7:00pm at the historic Kansas City Masonic Temple, 903 Harrison Street in Kansas City. We do not meet in July or August, and only have one meeting in November and December due to holidays. We enjoy fellowship and nourishment after the meeting when a meal is provided by our Junior Warden.

The brothers of Sheffield Lodge are working diligently to grow our lodge, create an interesting and enjoyable lodge experience and bring Sheffield back to the vibrant organization it once was. We need your help to succeed. If you are able, please join us at our stated meetings. Good attendance is key to our success.

Fraternally,

Message from the Worshipful Master – November 8, 2017

Greetings Brothers,

I wanted to provide you with a brief update on the activities of your lodge. Sheffield Lodge #625 has been active as we enter into the busy part of the Masonic year.

Sheffield hosted an installment of the 18th district Lodge of Instruction on October 25th. This session was very well attended and included a wonderful dinner of barbecue prepared by our Junior Warden, WB Steven Holbrook. I believe everyone enjoyed themselves and participated in a good learning experience.

We continue to work through the schedule of the Lodges of Instruction, and Sheffield has exhibited pretty good turnout. Ivanhoe Lodge #446 seems to be well on the way to taking the attendance trophy, but we could use all available brothers to attend to make sure our lodge has a good showing. Remaining sessions are Wednesday, November 8th at 7:00pm hosted by Kansas City Lodge #220, which meets at the Kansas City Scottish Rite Temple, 1330 E. Linwood Blvd, and the last session is November 15th at 7:00pm hosted by Temple Gate Lodge #299 at our own historic Kansas City Masonic Temple, 903 Harrison Street.

We completed the first degree for our newest brother at our last stated communication on October 26th. We plan on conferring his second degree at our next meeting on Thursday, November 9th, and hopefully his third degree at our stated communication on December 14th. We could use a good turnout and some assistance with both of these degrees.

I would like to remind everyone that per the lodge by-laws Sheffield Lodge only has one stated communication in November and December. We do not meet on the 4th Thursday in either of those months as the November meeting would always fall on Thanksgiving and the December meeting falls close to Christmas.

Thank you to those brothers who continue to diligently support our lodge with their efforts and regular attendance. If you haven’t attended in a while we would love to see you. If you are a member of another lodge and would like to join us for a meeting we’d love to see you.

Fraternally,

Message from the Worshipful Master – October 4, 2017

Greetings Brethren,

As the Trestleboard is designed as a forum for the current Master to provide our members with news of the happenings in the Lodge, I am pleased provide the latest update.

Sheffield Lodge has recently received and approved petitions for two brothers to join our ranks through dual membership and is currently investigating one petition for the degrees. We hope this is the start of a trend, as an active, growing membership base is the foundation of a successful lodge. If you know of anyone interested in the mysteries of Freemasonry, please encourage them to check out our website where they can learn more and can express interest in becoming a Freemason.

Members of Sheffield Lodge recently attended officer installation ceremonies at Kansas City Lodge #220, Belton-Grandview Lodge #450, Temple Gate Lodge #299 and Raytown Lodge #391, where good fellowship was enjoyed by all.

After the summer lull the fall season is now in full swing, which means it is time for the annual 18th District Lodges of Instruction. These sessions are hosted by our own Secretary RWB Cecil Wagers, who serves as District Deputy Grand Master, and will be taught by RWB Dennis Spears, our District Deputy Grand Lecturer. The schedule is posted below. We encourage all officers and members to attend these lodges, particularly the session being hosted by our lodge. A good turnout not only helps to keep our brethren sharp with ritual, but it represents Sheffield Lodge well within the Masonic community.

10/18 Alpha Lodge #659, 2121 Gentry, North Kansas City MO
10/25 Sheffield Lodge #625, 903 Harrison, Kansas City, MO
11/01 East Gate Lodge #630, 3516 Blue Ridge Cutoff, Kansas City, MO
11/08 Kansas City Lodge #220, 1330 E. Linwood, Kansas City, MO
11/15 Temple Gate Lodge #299, 903 Harrison, Kansas City, MO

All schools of instruction will begin at 7:00pm. We hope to see a good showing from our lodge.

We have moved full speed ahead into the new lodge year. Your audit committee has completed an audit of the finances of the lodge and determined all is in good order. The budget committee has established the budget for the year, which was approved by the members at the last stated communication.

Worshipful Brother Cary Marshall is spearheading an effort to contact all members who are listed as due for service recognition pins from 25-year all the way up to 65-year, to determine if they have received them and if they would like to do so. Stay tuned as we may have a number of service recognition ceremonies upcoming in the near future.

In conclusion, I would like to remind each Brother of Sheffield Lodge that member participation is the lifeblood of our fraternity. We need our members to attend meetings and participate in order to assure our organization remains active and vibrant. Thank you to those who make the effort to attend regularly. To those that don’t, we would love to see you at one of our stated communications, which are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 7:00pm. We have a light meal after. If you have transportation issues please contact our Secretary or myself and we can help arrange a ride to lodge. We’d love to see you!

Fraternally,

Message from the Worshipful Master – September 10, 2017

Greetings to the brethren of Sheffield Lodge. I am honored to have been selected by the members of this lodge to serve as your Master for the coming year. It is a privilege and a responsibility that I will take seriously.

Our primary goal as we progress through 2018 will be to increase the membership, attendance and activity associated with Sheffield Lodge. Over the past several years we have had very few new members, and unfortunately have lost a number of brothers to the scythe of time. It is my hope that we can operate our lodge in a manner that will generate interest not only among existing brothers, but that we can introduce our lodge to the community and spark interest from potential new members.

As you may be aware, a few years ago the lodge moved from it’s prior home at East Gate temple to the historic Kansas City Masonic Temple at 903 Harrison Street. While the location may not seem to be ideal, it is definitely an interesting venue, not only for the historic and unique architecture of the temple itself, but also for its’ location near the downtown Kansas City area, which is undergoing a renaissance of new residential development. We believe this could serve as a catalyst for new membership if we can make it known to those interested in the fraternity that there is a lodge just minutes from them.

Along with a community focus, we will strive to become a well respected lodge with regard to Masonic ritual. Our goal is to achieve the Bronze and Silver ritual designations in the coming year. This will take commitment and participation of all active members, but I feel confident we will be able to achieve it. To that end, we are conducting a ritual study club at the Temple on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, at 7:00pm. We encourage all interested brothers to join us.

Lastly, we hope to develop a differentiated and unique lodge experience at Sheffield Lodge. There are 27 Masonic lodges in the greater Kansas City area, and each has its own personality. Our goal is to make the personality of Sheffield Lodge unique enough that we will draw interest from existing brothers of other lodges who seek a flavor that is distinct from their home lodge. All of this will be done within strict conformity with the constitution, by-laws and rules of the Grand Lodge of Missouri, but I’m confident we can create a meeting experience that will be interesting and enjoyable.

For those Sheffield Lodge members who have not visited in a while, we encourage your attendance at our regular stated meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, at 7:00pm. We have brought back the tradition of an after meeting meal, and always enjoy good fellowship and a nice experience. We sincerely invite you to join us.

Fraternally,
Rick Kingcade
